2023
GRAPES: 30% SCHEUREBE, 30% MÜLLER-THURGAU, 30% HUXELREBE, 10% SILVANER
SKIN CONTACT: 10 DAYS
REGION: RHEINHESSEN, GERMANY
Producer: Andi (Andreas) Mann is the latest of a family that has grown wine at Eckelsheim, in southern Rheinhessen, since 1699. After business studies he took the reins and tore up the rulebook, becoming one of the brightest young names of a generation redefining what Germany’s biggest wine region can be. He farms his ten hectares organically and biodynamically — across steep, forested hills of limestone, porphyry, volcanic stone, and sand — with a focus on living soil and biodiversity, and works with near-obsessive precision in the cellar. His wines have quickly earned a reputation for energy, purity, and a vivid sense of place. “Mischkultur” — “mixed culture” — nods to the interplanted field blend.
Vinification: A field blend whole-bunch crushed and fermented on the skins for ten days before pressing. It then ages a full year in a large 2,400-litre oak cask before blending and bottling. Unfined, unfiltered, with no added sulfur.
Tasting notes: medium-bodied, white peach, grapefruit, elderflower and dried herbs, with a gentle grip
Pairings: roast duck with plums, mushroom spätzle, aged Gouda
DRINK: NOW TO 2029
